Lesson Summary:
You have reached the end of the lesson. If you have completed the online skill assessment in the Your Turn section of the lesson, you are done with this online module. If not, please finish your review of the lesson material and complete the skill assessment in the Your Turn section.

By now you should be able to accomplish the overall goals of the lesson, including the ability to sort, wash and dry of a load of laundry using standard laundry supplies and a residential washer and dryer. You should feel confident in your abilities to:

  • Sort laundry by fabric type and color prior to washing.
  • Distinguish among the general types of standard laundry supplies, including detergent, bleach, stain removers and fabric softeners.
  • Add the appropriate amount of detergent, bleach and fabric softener to the washing machine.
  • Set the residential washer’s water temperature, water level and agitation cycle based on the type and amount of material being laundered.
  • Set the residential dryer’s heat settings based on the type of material being dried.

The following provides a quick summary of the key steps in the laundry process. Feel free to either bookmark or print out this page for your future reference.

Review the care label on each item.

Remove laundry from the washer.

Add laundry to the dryer if the care label indicates that the items can be dried.

Add a dryer sheet if liquid fabric softener was not used in the wash cycle.

Clean the dryer’s lint filter.

Set the dryer temperature and cycle settings.

Press the start button to begin the drying cycle.

Return in about 30 minutes.

Congratulations! You are now able to sort, wash and dry laundry!
