This How to do laundry lesson is the first in the Life Lessons series of online modules that you will be taking this semester. Within the Life Lessons series, we will cover important basic skills that you will use for the rest of your life. By carefully reviewing the materials and completing the activities in these modules, you will not only achieve better outcomes than by taking a trial and error approach, but you will have a much easier time completing these common life tasks.
Is laundry a necessary evil? While doing the laundry is a necessary part of life, it doesn't have to be considered evil - if you know the right way to do it! In fact, check out just how fun doing the laundry is for these kids. By the conclusion of this lesson, you too will be dancing your way to cleaner laundry!
Objectives of this lesson: The overall goal for this lesson is for you to complete the sorting, washing and drying of a load of laundry using standard laundry supplies and a residential washer and dryer. By the end of the lesson you will be able to:
Sort laundry by fabric type and color prior to washing.
Distinguish among the general types of standard laundry supplies, including detergent, bleach, stain remover and fabric softeners.
Add the appropriate amount of detergent, bleach and fabric softener to the washing machine.
Set the residential washer’s water temperature, water level and agitation cycle based on the type and amount of material being laundered.
Set the residential dryer’s heat settings based on the type of material being dried.

Sort, Wash, Dry Sections: The main content for this lesson is contained in the Sort, Wash and Dry sections. These sections provide an overview of how to sort, wash and dry a load of laundry and include a video animation of how to sort laundry.
Video: A short video entitled "Laundry Day" highlights the entire laundry process from sorting to drying.
Your Turn: At the conclusion of this lesson, you will practice using the skills learned in this online module within a online skill assessment and an assignment that you will complete at home.
